An SG Ready interface allows an external device—such as an energy-management system, grid operator signal, photovoltaic controller or smart home platform—to request a specific operating mode from the heat pump.

The label does not mean that the heat pump automatically communicates directly with every smart grid. A compatible external controller, suitable wiring and correct system configuration may also be required.

How Do SG Ready Heat Pumps Work?

Traditional heat pumps operate mainly according to indoor temperature, water temperature and programmed schedules. SG Ready heat pumps can also receive external signals through their control interface.

These signals allow the system to adjust operation according to:

  • Grid demand
  • Available solar PV electricity
  • Dynamic electricity pricing
  • Energy-management priorities
  • Domestic hot water requirements
  • Available thermal-storage capacity

For example, an energy manager may encourage the heat pump to produce hot water when surplus solar electricity is available. The energy can then be stored as heat in a domestic hot water or buffer tank for later use.

The Four SG Ready Operating Modes

The SG Ready interface typically supports four defined operating states:

1. Restricted Operation

The heat pump can be temporarily restricted by an external signal during periods of high grid demand. System design and thermal storage help maintain comfort during this limited interruption.

2. Normal Operation

The heat pump follows its standard settings, schedules and temperature requirements without an external request to increase or reduce consumption.

3. Encouraged Operation

The external controller can encourage the heat pump to increase operation. This mode may be used when renewable electricity is available or electricity pricing is favourable.

4. Increased Operation

The heat pump receives a stronger request to operate or raise selected temperature setpoints. Depending on the system configuration, it may use this opportunity to store additional thermal energy in a buffer tank or domestic hot water tank.

The exact behaviour of each mode depends on the heat pump controller, installer settings and connected energy-management system.

Combining SG Ready with Solar PV

One of the most practical uses of SG Ready heat pumps is integration with a photovoltaic system. Solar panels often generate their highest output during the day, while household heating demand may be greater in the morning or evening.

An energy-management system can signal the heat pump to operate when surplus solar electricity is available. The system can use this energy to:

  • Heat domestic water
  • Increase buffer-tank temperature
  • Preheat the building within comfortable limits
  • Reduce electricity imported from the grid
  • Improve household solar self-consumption

This does not guarantee complete energy independence, but it can help the household use more locally generated renewable electricity.

SG Ready and Dynamic Electricity Tariffs

Dynamic tariffs allow electricity prices to change throughout the day according to market conditions. When connected to a compatible controller, an SG Ready heat pump may shift part of its operation towards lower-price periods.

For example, the system can produce domestic hot water before an expected price increase or use the building and water tank as short-term thermal storage. Any control strategy should protect comfort, hygiene requirements and the equipment’s normal operating limits.
