How does an air-to-water heat pump cycle work?

A heat pump operates by leveraging the principles of thermodynamics to transfer heat from one location to another. An air-to-water heat pump cycle absorbs the latent thermal energy present in the air, which serves as the primary heat source. Through a refrigeration cycle, the heat pump employs a compressor to increase the captured heat’s temperature and transfers it to a water-based system. The compressor plays a crucial role in this process.

It compresses the low-temperature, low-pressure refrigerant gas, which causes it to heat up significantly. This heated water can serve multiple purposes: Space Heating: It can be circulated through a hydronic heating system, such as radiators or underfloor heating, to provide warmth to a building’s interior spaces. It can also provide Domestic Hot Water: providing a source of hot water for everyday household needs like showers, washing dishes, and more.
